A home built by construction trades students at Ben Davis High School’s Area 31 Career Center is nearly ready for sale.

The home, located at 5137 Melrose Avenue in Wayne Township, was seen by dozens of people at an open house on Monday, April 9.

The new house is the result of a partnership between the MSD of Wayne Township and Indy Gateway. A series of other sponsors have made the project possible, including Kroger, B & W Plumbing and Heating, FedEx, Lowe’s, ProBuild and Spectrum Supply.

The 1,135-square-foot house has three bedrooms and two baths. It is the first of two homes being built on Melrose Avenue by Area 31 Career Center students.

“This project is benefiting our schools and community in a multitude of ways,” said Dr. Jeff Butts, superintendent of the MSD of Wayne Township. “Our construction trades students have learned valuable skills as they have worked on this home. A new house on a previously vacant lot will provide a new home for a family and improve our important Drexel Gardens neighborhood and the value of its existing homes.”
